"Although this book was first published in 1984, everything in it is as relevant today as when it was first published. If anything, the NEA has simply moved even further to the left than it was back them. It has simply adopted all of the politically correct trends of the far left. The history behind all of this has not changed. Thus, the NEA's influence in American education as a force of the left is still a fact that parents of children in the public schools must deal with." -- Samuel L. Blumenfeld - Preface to 2011 Edition

IT'S BACK!! NEA Trojan Horse in American Education. The 1984 book. which was the first expose of the National Education Association - the teacher's union, is back after some 10 years being out of print. Everything that was included in the print version is now available as an ebook. Included are All 284 pages, all footnotes (156), approx. 250 other references, and Index.

Sam points to what has transpired in America following the 2010 elections proves that people need to know what unions like SEIU and the NEA teachers union are up to. You need only look at early 2011 in Wisconsin when those unions literally took over the state Capitol in Madison for weeks.

Sam Blumenfeld in 1984 was the only person who had courage to take on the Teacher's Union. At that time the NEA vehemently denied it was a union. It claimed to be a Professional Association that was only interested in helping the kid. Flash forward to 2011 when the Teacher's Union in Wisconsin, along with other government employee unions brought the state of Wisconsin government to a halt. For weeks they held the entire state government captive.

When Sam Blumenfeld was finishing his 1984 book on the NEA his manuscript was refused by all publishers. Reason They all believed he and they would be dragged into court firvolously by the NEA Union to prevent him form getting his extensive research in the book out into the public. In otherwords, publishers were being intimidated by the powerful Teacher's Union. Finally he found a brave small group who formed a new publishing company and risked everything to get his blockbuster revelations into print. Fortunately the NEA was more busy at that time dealing with newly elected Ronald Reagan and his administration to bother squashing Sam's publisher. The rest is history the book sold tens of thousands of copies and was in print for many years. It was, and still is, the seminal book on the professional group which ultimately dropped all pretenses of being devoted only to the kids and their education. As recently as 2009 the NEA's top attorney, Bob Channin [July 9, 2009, NEA Representative Assembly, San Diego] in a speech to his members statied in effect that the interests of the members came ahead of the interest of the kids.

The quote is "[Why is the NEA effective?] It is not because of creative ideas, it is not because of the merit of our position, it is not because we care about children, it is not because we have a vision of great public schools for every child. NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power and we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people [members] who are willing to pay us millions of dollars in dues each year because they believe we are the union that can most effectively represent them, the unions that can protect their rights and advance their interests as education employees."*

If you do not know all about this union which is supported by the dues of members who, in turn, are paid by your local property and sales taxes (As well as billions the Federal Government puts into public education) now is the time to learn what you need to know to be an informed voter in elections to come. The NEA is spending millions and millions of dollars to get officialls elected who will do their bidding. So, citizens who pay the bills for education really need to know all the background facts.

NEA Trojan Horse in American Education eBook Samuel L Blumenfeld

This is one of the most important books on the history of education in America. If you ever wanted to understand why things just gradually get worse the more we spend and the more government gets involved this will answer those questions. It shows all did not just start, but you can go back to the early 19th century. How the "icons" of education were favorable to the Bismark German influence, which was socialist. It shows how they set up the teachers colleges to further their view and how state run education was a means to an end. That end was statism. The quotes from John Dewey in the 1890's was really informative. These people knew before Goebbles and Lenin that the future of a nation rests with its youth. Read the Communist Manifesto and see that the control of education was part of the "plan". Very few strings need ever be pulled when generations are taught that which is inimicable to the Christian values held by our Founders.

NEA Trojan Horse in American Education eBook Samuel L Blumenfeld Reviews

Good book the left would prefer you don't read.
I read this book a decade ago, and reread it last week. Having done a lot of research on education and literacy during the interim, I can more confidently vouch for the scholarship and accuracy of this important book.

I'll warn you frankly that dealing with some of this information for the first time is disorienting for most people. It certainly was for me. Here's why. We have to come to grips with the bizarre, totally unexpected possibility that our education establishment promoted and lied about a reading pedagogy (called Look-Say or Whole Word) which doesn't work and, in fact, caused widespread illiteracy; and further, that the country's largest, most powerful education lobbying group (the National Education Association or NEA) persistently and consciously opposed those education policies which would be best for children and the country.

Here's the grimly funny irony. Whenever the NEA encounters criticism, the NEA will invariably charge the critic with being against "public education." I am very sorry to report my own impression that the Number One obstacle to "public education" in this country is the NEA itself. NEA appears to stand for No Education Association.

Many teachers are forced to be members of this quasi-union; and their dues are extracted by force. I suspect that the majority of these teachers would like to escape. The NEA has grown big, rich, powerful, and imperious, but even its own members seem to have little respect or affection for it.

Blumenfeld records the NEA's history up to 1984, when the book was published. At that time the Cold War was still quite hot. Much of the NEA's aggression is more easily understood if you suppose that the bosses were actually fighting for the other side. The Russians, with their Brezhnev Doctrine, were quite feisty at that time; and the NEA was feisty along with them. I'm guessing there was quite an identity crisis when the USSR collapsed! In any event, I urge the NEA, bosses and teachers alike come on home, guys. This country is still humanity's best hope; and you should be devoting your considerable resources to promoting what is truly best for our citizens and our children.
A classic that is fresh with every read. If you want to understand what is foundationally wrong with education in the United States, this is the book for you.
Eveyone should read this book. It is all about why our education system is where it is today.
A great book that gives a history lesson and documentation so the reader can go to the sources for themselves.
I just recently became aware of this book, although it was originally published back in the 1980s. At the time it probably seemed like a "right-wing conspiracy theory" book, but it is amazing how prophetic it has proved to be. It really helps put into context what is going today in not only the educational system, but also among the liberal-progressive elites.
if you've ever wondered why the Government Education System (you've been taught to call it Public Education) doesn't work it is because it was designed to do exactly what it is doing. The author develops the history and the current state including curriculum changes which the "guys in the white lab coats" knew would leave 30% of the students to functional illiteracy. Evil is alive in the NEA.
